    Hi,
What will the jimmy raney book be about? Is it a book of transcriptions? Whatever it is, I am sure I will want one!

    • Jon Raney

Hi Rick, The book requires a little backstory to explain. It’s a bit beyond transcribing his solos. It attempts to get into the “how” of his style.

It was originally a method book my father started where he shows examples and methods for creating line. It was a bit short in long hand and manuscript paper. What I did was translate it digital, expanding it from there into my own analysis of his style, breaking apart his phrasing nuggets, his rhythmic concepts and his compositional technique. It took different concepts across different transcribed examples. In those ways somewhat similar to Levine’s theory book.

The contract is signed with Chuck Sher. Just waiting on him to release it. To start it will be via pdf download only. Book form will be TBD

    Hi Rick,

Well there were some last minute snafus But the graphics designer and UI are working feverishly to fix as I type this! And it will be even better. Also good news it will be released in book form as well. I estimate release 1-2 weeks.

Thanks, Jon! My son and I both play, so we will both be buying copies as soon as it is out. We both love your dad’s playing.

please advise any time that there is an update on Jimmy’s legacy – in particular the possible methodology book which I have been seeking for decades.

    Many thanks

Whut! Holy Sh*tsnacks! Came by this page on a total lark after literally waiting YEARS for you to put this out. Your dad is undeniably one of my major influences. Can’t hardly wait! Thanks Jon!

    Jon,

I just ordered a physical copy, as I wanted tangible proof of your landmark book. The rough draft that you had posted prior was a huge source of rhythmic fascination. There scant few many musicians and educators brave enough to talk about rhythm like you do here. We often overlook rhythm in jazz education because scales and harmony are so much more marketable to the masses. Scales and harmony are the raw materials, and rhythm is the delivery.

I’m excited to receive my hardcopy. Polyrhythm is starting to make inroads with some brave music educators, but poly meter is still a road less traveled. Thank you for delivering the true genius behind your father’s playing. True bebop is polyrhythmic and polymetric, and your dad was keen enough to hear that. Here’s to less “look what I can do” in the future, as more of us mere mortals realize the reality of rhythm!

      Hello Alex,

I’m glad you”ve gotten so much out of the Raney book. Although it’s been a while since I’ve looked, pretty sure there’s a substantial amount of new material in the finalized edition to definitely make it worth your while.

      Thanks again for your support!

Jon, is the guitar music tabbed? I’m an average reader but tab helps to know what position(s) on the neck are used.

Sounds like the book is an incredible labor of love with incredible content!

    Thank you,
    Trent

  • Jon Raney

    Hi Trent,

    Sorry no tabs 😔

You will need to slog thru score unfortunately. That said my father could be notoriously unconventional in his fingering and position if you watch his videos. Way different than Doug’s for example. At least from my point of view as a non guitarist 😬
